Principal Consultant – SQL Server DBA

Position Summary

The Lead Consultant (MSSQL) is responsible for working within a technical team of professionals providing IT services to remotely located clients. Reporting directly to the SQL Server DBA Manager. This position operates on a rotating 9-hour shift fulfilling the shift-lead role.

Position Responsibilities

•   Responsible for all shift-lead activities, including but not limited to escalation response, shift coverage, and mentoring of junior team members
•   Responsible for providing all aspects of SQL Server Database administration support during assigned shift within the context of an ITIL based ticketing tool
•   Ticket tasks can include but are not limited to:
  •   Break fix, Account administration, Always ON, Replication, Log shipping, clustering, backups and recovery, audit reporting, Performance tuning as well as proactive environment health checks
•   Oversee and implement SQL Server based projects:
  •   Upgrades, migrations, refreshes, cloud implementations
•   Review and manage work queue, work in-take processes, execute work, task requests, and work any other requests from clients or SQL Server manager might assign
•   Assist in the development and implementation of DBA process, procedures and SOPs for SQL Server Database Systems
•   Customer communications – be it via the ticketing system, separate email, direct person to person phone interaction, as well as participation in conference calls and in some cases providing leadership of customer interaction in conference calls and other communications
•   Support and follow the DI P0 and P1 escalation process
•   Support and follow the DI security management program and policy
•   Support and enforce DI Change Management process and procedures
•   Responsible for evaluating patching requests, communicating constraints, risks, issues and timelines for deployment
•   Provide customer health checks as required
•   Take on New Technologies as the Company requires
•   Drive to obtain new certifications in relevant technologies

Required Experience and Skills

•   Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related field preferred OR equivalent combination of education and experience
•   8+ years of direct hands on DBA support of SQL Server database support
•   2+ years’ experience in a services company is strongly preferred (Hosting, remote services, PaaS/IaaS, etc.)
•   Expertise in all major versions of SQL Server technology stack (2000+)
•   Hands-on operational expertise as an SQL Server DBA, and related technologies such as Always On, Replication, Log shipping, High Availability and Backup/Recovery
•   Performance-tuning skills to review performance data and prepare reports
•   Expertise of SQL Server maintenance/patching mechanics
•   Logging, managing, and resolving Server SR's with Microsoft Support
•   Experience with Code Migration tools is a plus
•   T-SQL and Power Shell scripting skills are good to have
•   Hands on Windows system administration experience a plus
•   Experience with Azure is a plus
•   Experience with Amazon AWS is a plus
•   Strong communication skills are an absolute must for this position:
  •   Strong English speaking and writing skills are required
  •   Ability to manage customer or in-house escalation calls is required
  •   Strong comprehension skills are required
  •   Conversational skills are a must
•   Strong skills in the use of Microsoft products: MS Word, Excel, and Outlook are required
•   Experience and ability to follow but also develop and write operational documentation is required
